In this workshop we want to pose the question "what makes Wikiversity unique (with regard to higher education)?" What are the specific qualities, features or "affordances" of the Wikiversity that separate it from various other free and/or open education sites and projects? How are these qualities to be combind with work done in institutions of higher education? These questions can be investigated in terms of several dimensions, including those of intellectual emancipation, emancipatory knowing, wiki freedom, folk knowledge and science, formal higher education vs informal forms of teaching and learning, reflexive uncertainty, etc.

At this point, the following presentations are proposed for this workshop:

  • Teemu Mikkonen, Tension between consensus and plurality in the use of Wikiversity in higher education
  • Juha Suoranta, Wikiversity as a tool for radical equality in higher education
  • Tere Vadén, Push and pull factors in the cooperation between higher education and Wikiversity
