Abstract (please use no less than 300 words to describe your proposal)

Kaltura and the Wikimedia Foundation have been engaged in a multi-year effort to help bring collaborative video to Wikipedia. The dream of open web collaborative video on wikipedia has faced many challenges. These challenges range from a non-uniform HTML5 development platform and the lack of MediaWiki javascript infrastructure, to questions of accessibility and community engagement with adding video to articles. Today, these challenges are being addressed with increased industry support for HTML5, increased developer attention on the javascript platform, and creative volunteer and organization initiatives. Currently thousands of users use the multimedia beta on Wikipedia and Commons, powered by the Kaltura html5 library. The beta includes the enhanced video player, and tools for easy upload and insertion of video into pages.

Other initiatives (some of which have proposals for talks here at Wikimania) include: Efforts to support new industry free video formats from Google. The "Lets Get Video on Wikipedia" campaign in collaboration with the Open Video Alliance, and Wikimedia New York City. Making video more accessible via multi-lingual timed text subtitles with collaboration with the Participatory Culture Foundation Universals Subtitles efforts. P2P next content distribution via peer to peer / community CDN. Making searching, upload and inserting of media easy ( add-media-wizard). And of course Kaltura's big undertaking of building a collaborative HTML5 video editor ;)

I will briefly present the state of these collaborations and outline the many ways people can get involved to help realize Collaborative Video on Wikipedia.
