A panel discussion with interaction with the attendees about the current state of Wikimedia and MediaWiki globalisation efforts that are coordinated from Wikimedia Meta and translatewiki.net, and brainstorming on possible process improvements.

Abstract

In this panel we are will describe the current efforts of globalisation in the Wikimedia community with regards to the coordination that takes place from Wikimedia Meta and translatewiki.net. Together with the attendeed we will discuss how we can improve MediaWiki/Wikimedia localisation with regards to quantity, quality, efficiency and effectiveness. How, for example, can we encourage and support the translators community, how we can get user feedback more effectively and so on.

The translator's community we here take into consideration is of the Translatewiki.net, the current MediaWiki platform. Historically it was a subset of Wikimedia community, it may be arguable if it is still so: what they are today can be a fresh topic to the Wikimedia community, and therefore we see a new challenge how to bridge two communities in the same language: translators' one and MediaWiki users' including Wikimedia editing community but not restricted to them alone.

User feedback to l10n: while we have already mediawiki-i18n-l but at the same time language barriers may hinder some of MediaWiki users to give us their ideas for improvement. In this talk we will give a thought how we can reach such non-English speaking parts of our users in an appropriate manner, examining existing and possible communication channels, and counting pros and cons.

Empowerment to the translators would include some technical features including LiquidThreads.
